My Internship Success Story
Years ago, internships used to get a bad rap. They were all about making copies and memorizing coffee orders. But that’s changed. Nowadays, interns can truly acquire critical resume-building skills. And in this job market, that’s so important for two reasons: (a) even entry-level jobs require some experience and (b) what you learn in school can be very different than what you do in your career.
Luckily, my job search was an easy one, thanks to Vimarc and how meaningful they made my internship. I started here two years ago with Account Services and was provided with so many wonderful opportunities to learn.
For example, everyone taught me the ins and outs of what it takes to work in a full-service marketing agency. That helped me understand the importance of each person’s role. Not to mention, I saw how such a close-knit team can create a welcoming culture.
If I had went straight into an entry-level position after finishing my degree, I would have been lost. Vimarc allowed me to grow, and I am proud to be with them full-time now!
This summer, everything came full circle as I got to oversee our new intern, Abby Howie. During her time with us, I worked hard to make sure the internship was purposeful. To accomplish this, I made her development a priority while letting her be a set of fresh eyes on what everyone was working on. I’m confident it was a success for Abby, but don’t take my word for it. Here’s what she had to say:
“Before interning at Vimarc, I didn’t know what to expect or what I would do after graduating. So I really wanted to gain experience and see what this industry is like. The internship allowed me to discover what a marketing agency is all about. Vimarc was different because everyone truly helps and supports each other. I never felt like I was just doing “intern tasks” or things people didn’t want to do.
Some of my biggest learnings were how much of a process everything is and how projects move from one person to the next. I enjoyed working with Account Service because you see everything from start to finish. Overall, I loved my experience—it was very cool and insightful.”
Abby’s experience was like my own. Both of us got to see how much Vimarc understands the true purpose of an internship and how they find ways for the experience to meet everyone’s expectations (without having to run errands). Because of their efforts over the years, their internship program has been a success. Three current full-time employees (pictured above) started out as Vimarc interns. And all together, we have 32 years of service at the agency!
