Employee Spotlight: Meghan Boyd
The creative mind constantly needs to change and evolve. It’s important to continuously be open to new skills and experiences in order to get innovative perspectives and ideas. Sometimes creativity can find home in a situation that’s perfect to foster this type of growth. That’s how it’s worked out for Meghan Boyd, our Senior Art Director, who has established herself on our creative team and grown with us over the last 15 years.
She’s a supermom and employee who’s seen it all, and she’ll tell you herself that it hasn’t always been easy. But you don’t overcome challenges without learning from them. We’ve asked Meghan some questions to hear exactly how she’s come to appreciate her time and experiences here at Vimarc.
Q: What was your first impression of Vimarc? Do you remember what your first days as an employee were like?
A: Oh, yes! I would never forget; it was a bit overwhelming. I started on early in October. I was replacing one of the two production artists. The artist training me had just turned in her two-week notice. She trained me for a week, then I was on my own! I learned everything by being thrown in the fire. It was stressful and scary, but I think it made me a better production artist and employee because everything was on me. It wasn’t easy, but I had no choice but to put my head down and figure it out, and that’s exactly what I did.
Q: What’s a favorite project you’ve worked on?
A: John Baumgardner and I worked on an RFP for The Summit PR, I think in 2010. We collected all the print PR we had created for The Summit. I created paper out of the clippings. Then, I used that paper to make a large origami dress, dress shirt and tie, with tags. It was a really different project to execute. I got to use my fine art skills as well as my design skills. I loved the outcome! We didn’t get the work, but we did win a local Gold Louie and went on to win a Bronze in the Regional Louies. I was really proud of the work.
Q: What has been your favorite Vimarc-related tradition?
A: The Christmas Ornament—it’s hilarious. You get to see another side of people that is really snarky and funny. I never heard of another employer having something like this at the holidays. It’s something we all chat about through the year.
Q: Agency work requires a lot of multitasking when tackling different projects, especially on the creative side. How have you handled being able to juggle so many requests and projects over 15 years?
A: Patience and focus. I have set up a system of how I work that is efficient and organized. I think my small amount of training and not having a coworker to ask questions really helped me learn how to problem-solve on my own. I’m a woman and a mom. It’s basically what I do all day—solving problems!
Q: What advice would you give young graphic designers or creative people about how to approach a career in the advertising industry?
Work for an in-house design company or ad agency the first few years to get a feel for that type of work and how to deal with clients. Then just freelance. Don’t give all your time to work—family and personal time is so much more important. Also, don’t wait for your employer to give you what you need. Do it yourself. And NETWORK! That can be a big one.
Q: What is it about Vimarc that has helped keep you interested in working here?
A: The people I work with—they are amazing and so funny. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them.
